I love how you put this, and that you acknowledged systemic issues like racism, sexism and poverty. Self-help is empowering for those of us who are privileged to simply be able to shift a “mindset” and unlock a treasure trove of blessings. But for others, it places the blame squarely on the shoulders of the person struggling, which compounds the problem. You can’t just go “Wash Your Face” and solve all your problems. It’s basically the prosperity gospel, dressed up a bit — i.e. if you’re struggling, there must be a morality issue to blame. I’ve written a bit about this, too! Look forward to reading more of your thoughts on the topic.
